The British Guide to German Beer:
Manchester

Back to list of Counties

See also the listings for Cheshire, as the boundaries can be a bit confusing and many of the pubs are in easy reach.

Carrington's Off-licences: 322 Barlow Moor Rd, Chorlton, Manchester M21 8AY. Tel: 0161 881 0099 [map] and 680 Wilmslow Rd, Didsbury, Manchester M20. Tel: 0161 446 2546 [map] A brilliant off-licence both for beer and wine. The owners are considering reopening the Didsbury branch as a bar/pub. The Chorlton branch still has a great range of German beers, Belgian beers and many others. They have been known to stock the rare and much-sought-after (Belgian) Westvleteren.

The Bottle Stop (off licence), 136 Acre Lane, Bramhall, Stockport, SK8 7PD [map]. Tel: 0161 439 4904. Peter Edwardson reports that it "stocks a very wide range of German beers, with particular emphasis on Munich. Probably at least 40 varieties available at any one time, including several Weizen beers, plus lots of Belgian, Czech and other European beers, and a good range of interesting British bottles."

The Railway, 1 Avenue Street, Stockport, SK1 2BZ [map], stocks a "wide range of Belgian and German bottled beers" and is a past winner of Greater Manchester CAMRA's Regional Pub of the Year. [Added Sept 2004, thanks to Lars Selleth]

The Hillary Step, 199 Upper Chorlton Road, Whalley Range, M16 0BH [map]. T: 0161 881 1978. A new real ale bar, opened in July 2004 as Manchester's first non-smoking bar and the lastest addition to Chorlton's impressive array of beer bars. When I visited in October 2004 they had the gorgeous König Ludwig Weissbier on draught and Warsteiner on draught, with Erdinger Schneeweisse in bottles. Owned by Rob Goater and managed by Dave Yuill, who used to run the Marble Beer House. They also have four well-kept cask ales, Belgian bottled beers and a policy of "no music, no vending machines, no food". Palmiro's highly rated Italian restaurant is next door and the Iguana Bar is a few minutes walk away. [Added Sept 2004, thanks to Neil Clapson]

Iguana Bar (www.iguanabar.co.uk), Iguana Bar, 115-117 Manchester Road, Chorlton-cum-Hardy, Manchester M21 9PG (Opp. Chorlton Leisure Centre) [map] T: 0161 881 9338. Another of Chorlton's modern beer bars, between the Marble Beer House and the Hillary Step. When I visited in October 2004 they had Erdinger Weissbier on tap and Krombacher in bottles.

Idaho (www.idahobar.co.uk) bar/restaurant, 99 Manchester Road, Chorlton-cum-Hardy, Manchester M21 9GA [map]. T: 0161 881 6699. Specialises in US craft beers but also has a few interesting Germans and other international beers including Krombacher, Erdinger Weissbier, Maisel's Weisse and Schöfferhofer Hefeweizen. Full beer list and menu on website.

Marble Beer House (www.marblebeers.co.uk), 57 Manchester Road, Chorlton-cum-Hardy, Manchester M21 9PW. [map] T: (0161) 881 9206. Listed in CAMRA's Good Beer Guide 2001 as stocking "a good range of bottled Belgian and German beer".

The Bar (www.marblebeers.co.uk), 533 Wilbraham Road, Chorlton (opposite Safeway), Manchester M21 0UE [map]. T: 0161 861 7576. A pleasant and reasonably trendy bar stocking Erdinger and Schneider Weisse.

The Lounge Cafe Bar, 478 Wilbraham Rd, M21 9AS [map]. T: 0161-881-9130. A nice, continental-style cafe-bar serving Erdinger Weissbier and Krombacher Pils. They also serve a good range of British bottle conditioned ales -- real ale in a bottle -- and a few Belgians.

The Marble Arch Inn (www.marblebeers.co.uk), 73 Rochdale Road, Manchester M4 4HY [map]. Tel: 0161 832 5914. Stocks a range of German and Belgian beers, as do the other members of the Marble Beers group (The Bar and The Marble Beer House)

Bar Fringe, 8 Swan Street, Manchester M4 5JN. [map] Tel: 0161 835 3815. Reputed to serve a good range of Belgian and German beers (some say the best in Manchester), all served in the appropriate glass. Also has a beer garden. Across the road is the Smithfield, with a good reputation for real ales. Listed in CAMRA's Good Beer Guide 2001

Bar Centro, 74 Tib Street, M4 1LG [map]. T: (0161) 835 2863 Serves Erdinger, Kuepper's Koelsch and Warsteiner as well as a range of real ales and Belgian beers.

KRO Bar (www.kro.co.uk), 325 Oxford Road, Manchester M13 9PG [map]. Tel: 0161 274 3100, Fax: 0161 273 7550. Just opposite the University, beers listed include: Jever Pilsener, Paulaner Hefe-Weisse, Hof Brau Original Munchener, Flensberger Pilsner, Krombacher (draught). There are three other branches nearby (see website).

Temple of Convenience, Corner of Great Bridgewater Street and Oxford Street, Manchester M1 [map]. It used to be an underground public toilet in the middle of the road. Always has a few good imported beers, sometimes German. Small and often crowded, could benefit from a lick of paint, but quite a nice, unusual little place and worth a visit. Other beers found include Duvel and Belle Vue Gueuze (Belgian)

Sand Bar, 120 Grosvenor Street, All Saints, Manchester M1 7HL [map]. T: (0161) 273 3141. The Good Beer Guide 2001 states: "German imports are a speciality"

The Crescent, 20 The Crescent, Salford M5 4PF [map]. Tel: 0161 736 5600. Rumoured to have a good range of German and Belgian bottled beers and Erdinger Weissbier on draught, but I haven't checked it.

Queens Arms, 4-6 Honey Street, Red Bank, Cheetham, Manchester M8 8RG [map]. Tel: (0161) 8344239 Specialises in Belgian beers but also has some Germans, or so I'm told.

The Blue Cat Cafe Bar (www.bluecatcafe.co.uk), 17 Shaw Road, Heaton Moor, Stockport SK4 4AG [map]. Tel: 0161 432 2117. They claim a range of German beers including Krombacher on draught, Warsteiner, Bitburger, Erdinger and Franziskaner.

The Cornerhouse Shop, 94 Park Road, Sale M33 6HZ [map] Off licence. Stocks beers from Beer Paradise.

The Beer House, 6 Angel Street, Manchester, M4 4BR. Previously listed here but no longer stocks German beer.

You'll may also find German beers on sale at the annual Christmas German market, usually in St. Ann's Square or thereabouts but check local listings for details.

If you know of anywhere that I've missed (and there must be many), please let me know using the feedback form below..

Frueh Koelsch Bottle

It's worth checking out the mainstream off licences and major supermarkets, and if you still can't find what you're looking for locally, try our Mail Order listings.
