Quinns, 65 Kentish Town Road, London NW1 8NY [map]. Tel: 020 7267 8240. Nearest tube: Camden, or Camden Road rail station. The best range of German beers in any bar in London, usually with around 15-20 bottled beers, concentrating mainly on Bavarian Weissbiers. Last time I was there, they had Gutmann Hefeweizen, Andechs Weisse, Andechs Dunkel Weisse, Staffelberg Weisse, Pyraser Angewirts Weizen, Greif Weisse, Karg Weisse, Karg Dunkel Weisse, Recken Weisse, Eittinger Spezial, Eittinger Hell, Tegernseer Hell, Mährs Weisse, Augustinerbrau Münchner Dunkel, Schneider Weisse Hell, Göller Weisse and more. Also stocks an even larger range of Belgian bottled beers, Budvar on tap and 3 or 4 real ales. A nice, Irish owned bar, a little reminiscent of a Belgian cafe-brasserie with beer garden, music not too dominant and football (Sky Sport) often to be found on TV. Open until 02:00 on Friday and Saturday. Wheelchair accessible but not the toilets, which are downstairs.
Noble Green Wines, 153 - 155 High Steet, Hampton Hill, Middlesex, TW12 1NL. [map]. T: 020 8979 1113. www.noblegreenwines.co.uk. They've emailed me to say they stock beer from Rothaus as well as... [deep breath] "Augustiner, Hacker Pschorr, Arco-Brau, Lauterbacher, Brau Im Moos, Paulaner, Hofbrau, Weltenburger Monastry, Aldersbacher Monastry, Andechs, Löwenbräu, Schloss Irbach, Tegernsee, Schenlenkerla, Unertl, Spaten, Graf Zu Toerring, Erdinger, Schneider, Krombacher, Früh, Kaltenberg, Stierburg, D.U.B [?], Bischoff, Hosl, To name but a few." Wahey! I haven't been able to visit to peruse the range yet, but it sounds very impressive. [Feb 2008]
Oktoberfest Pub, 678-680 Fulham Rd., London SW6 5SA. [map]. T: 020 7736 5293. www.octoberfestpub.com. A new Oktoberfest pub with Paulaner beers. I've not been there yet, so please let me know what you think of it.
Bavarian Beerhouse in London, 190 City Road, London EC1V 2QH. [map]. T: 020 7608 0925. www.bavarian-beerhouse.co.uk. A new, permanent venue for the Bavarian Beerhouse crew who have organised Oktoberfest celebrations in the Singapura restaurant, Limeburner Lane, for the last couple of years, but now they have their own permanent venue, open Monday to Sunday from 11-11, since December 2005. Beers currently listed are: from Paulaner, Hofbräuhaus, Erdinger, Warsteiner, Diebels Alt and Küppers Kölsch.
Steins, on the North bank of the Thames, in Richmond (see website for map). [map]. T: 020 8948 8189. www.stein-s.com. A Bavarian Biergarten on the banks of the Thames at Richmond, with a menu of genuine Bavarian dishes and Erdinger Weissbier (tap), Erdinger Dunkles Weissbier (bottle), Paulaner Helles (tap) and Paulaner Dunkles (tap) and some alcohol-free stuff. See website for map.
Microbar, 14 Lavender Hill, London SW11 5SS [map]. T: (020) 7228 5300 www.microbar.org. Recommended by several readers, this is a specialist bottled beer bar near Clapham Junction: "We routinely stock Schneider Weisse, Schneider Aventinus, Erdinger Dunkel, Erdinger Pikantus, Maisels Weisse, Paulaner, Schlösser or Kutscher Alt. We also frequently (depending on availability) have Andechs, Kuppers Kolsch, Hartmann, Gutmann, Recken, and Unertl". [August 2004]
The Magpie & Crown, 128 High Street, Brentford, Middlesex TW8 8EW. [map] Tel: 020 8560 5658. Pete Garrod of the London Guide to Belgian Beer tipped me off about this one:"This homely real ale pub, voted pub of the year by the local CAMRA branch, has an ever changing roster of Belgian (and German) bottled beers, plus Hoegaarden on draught." Steve from the Magpie & Crown says "we recently added Paulaner Original Munchner 'lager' and Paulaner Weisse Beer to our portfolio of DRAUGHT beers. We were the first pub in the UK to stock these great beers on draught (and as far as I know, still the only pub in the UK)." Seriously impressive. Nearest station: Brentford BR.
The Wenlock Arms, 26 Wenlock Road, London N1 7TA. T: 020 7608 3406. [map]
Steve Bolton says "I notice that the Wenlock Arms in Hoxton has been omitted from your list and they too serve a variety of German (and Belgian) ales in bottles, including Erdinger Weissbier." The Wenlock has won CAMRA North London Pub of the Year at least three times. The Wenlock is an old-style traditional pub in a backstreet near the canal with an excellent range of real ales and gorgeous black pudding doorstep sandwiches in beautifully fresh bread. Nearest tube: Old Street.
The Porterhouse (www.porterhousebrewco.com),
21-22 Maiden Lane. London WC2E 7NA. 020 7836 9931.
[map] Nearest tube: Charing Cross or Covent Garden.
An Irish pub, but by no means another of those unwelcome, samey, mock-Irish
affairs, it specialises in Irish beers from Dublin's Porterhouse brewery (of
which it is an offshoot). It's a huge pub, on more levels than I can recall with
striking decor in a brewery theme -- lots of brass piping. It also serves a
range of German beers, including:
Erdinger Weissbier,
Erdinger Weissbier
Dunkel and
Erdinger Pikantus;
Schneider Weisse
and Schneider
Aventinus; Veltins and
Weihenstephaner
Hefeweizen plus 25 Belgian beers and many more from around the world. The
menu states that they are trying to create the world's biggest collection of
bottled beers, so they invite you to swap a full bottle they haven't already got
for a free pint. Not just the usual boring pint of Guinness here, then -- try
some real stout. They often show football matches. (recommended by Karen Wilding) [August 2004]
The White Horse 1 Parson's Green, SW6 4UL. Tel: 020 7736 2115, [map] Nearest tube: Parson's Green. Sometimes known as the "sloany pony", this excellent and well renowned real ale pub serves Schneider Weisse, Schneider Aventinus and Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier (all in bottles) as well as a fantastic range of international bottled beers and real ales in a comfortable and spacious setting with a real fire. The beer garden looks out over Parson's Green. Nearest tube: Parson's Green. It no longer serves Früh Kölsch on tap -- shame.
Priory Arms, 83 Lansdowne Way, Stockwell, London SW8 2PB. [map] T: 020 7622 1884. w: www.prioryarms.co.uk). Website lists an impressive array of German bottled beers, including some Rauchbier (smoked). Get 'em in!
The Slaughtered Lamb, 34-35 Great Sutton Street, London, EC1V 0DX [map]. Not far from Farringdon tube, and a short hop from the Jerusalem Tavern and the Dovetail, this pleasant, modern pub serves Paulaner Hell & Erdinger Weissbier on draught, plus some interesting beers from other nations. The menu specialises in fish and chips. But it's usually too packed to sit and eat on weekday evenings. Probably best on Saturdays when it isn't full of suits. [Oct 2006]
Al's Café Bar, 11-13 Exmouth Market, London EC1R 4QD [map]. An anonymous reader tells me that they have "Warsteiner on draught as well as Paulaner Wheat Beer on draught & Paulaner Original Münchner in bottles".
Hugo's bar-restaurant in the Goethe-Institut London is one that I haven't checked yet, but sounds promising. I'm planning a visit in the near future.
The Anglesea Arms, 15 Selwood Terrace, SW7 3QG. T: 020 7373 7960 [map] serves Erdinger Weissbier and Erdinger Weissbier Dunkel. It's a nice little pub in a quiet area of Chelsea with good food, a beer terrace at the front, real ales and some good Belgian Beers, too.
Tiroler Hut Austrian restaurant, 27 Westbourne Grove, London W2 4UA [map]. T: 020 7727 3981. Leave your frowns at the door. This restaurant really brought a smile to my face. It's been a family affair since 1967 and has a relaxed, homely feel to it, with no concessions to modern trendiness. The staff are friendly and the food is warming and wholesome. We were greeted by the sound of an accordian accompanied by cowbells as we arrived, played by the owner in traditional Austrian dress, encouraging diners to join the bell ringing! You can get a flavour of the place from the pictures on the website. Serves Erdinger Weissbier and Erdinger Weissbier Dunkel, and also Dortmunder Union on draught, available in a litre "mass". They also have Gösser (Goesser) -- an Austrian beer that's best avoided, being a poor quality lager made with rice and hop extract. Thanks to James Creighton. Cheers!
The Garden Gate, 14 South End Road, London NW3 2QE. [map]. Tel: 020 7433 6891. Handily situated just by Hampstead Heath station on the fringes of the Heath, this pub has a nice Biergarten and serves Erdinger Weissbier, Erdinger Weissbier Dunkel, Schneider Weisse, Paulaner Hell and Küppers Kölsch along with some good English real ales and a range of other international bottled beers [Sept 2005].
The Gallery Bar Restaurant, 190 Broadhurst Gardens, London, NW6 3AY. Tel: (020) 7636 5593. Daniel reports: "This bar has Erdinger Weiss Bier on tap. The bar is around the corner from West Hampstead tube station" [August 2004].
Portobello Gold, 95 - 97 Portobello Road, Notting Hill, London W11 2QB [map]. Tel: 020 7460 4900. This trendy, bohemian bar/restaurant with internet cafe, hotel and art gallery serves Erdinger Weissbier (bottled: 500ml for £3.95) plus a range of Belgians (Hoegaarden and Leffe Blonde on tap, Hoegaarden Grand Cru, Hoegaarden Verboeden Vrucht, Chimay Grand Reserve and Westmalle Tripel). Bottled beers are pricey. Real ales included Directors and Theakston's Old Peculiar and Pitfield's organic, unfiltered lager. The menu favours oysters and seafood. Tends to be very busy on market days.
The Purple Turtle serves Erdinger Weissbier and Erdinger Weissbier Dunkel (see website for branches). They are loud and bustling with an awesome jukebox but have far fewer beers than they used to.
Jerusalem, 33-34 Rathbone Place, London W1P 1AD. [map] T: 020 7255 1120. Noted for stocking "a huge array of bottled beers" (Time Out Guide to Pubs and Bars 2000/2001)
The Crown Organic Pub, 223 Grove Road, Victoria Park, london E3 5SN. Previously listed here but now closed (2006).
The Duke of Cambridge Organic Pub, 30 St Peters Street, Islington, London N1. Tel: 020 7359 3066 Time Out's "best gastro pub" 2000. Serves only organic beers, including Riedenburger Weisse and Bucher Pils (both bottled). A nice, easy-going organic pub-restaurant away from the noise and bustle of Upper Street. Excellent food menu. Part of the Singhboulton group.
Die Jagerhutte (now closed), 36 Queensway, Bayswater, London W2 3RX. Sadly, this fairly traditionally styled German restaurant serving Kutscher Alt, Schneider Weisse, Dortmunder Union Original on tap and Warsteiner Premium closed in 2002.
Schnecke ("Snail"): 80-82 Upper Street, London N1 0NU. Unfortunately, both this and the other branch (58-59 Poland Street, London W1V 3DF) have ceased trading. Shame. This short-lived Alsatian restaurant had about ten German beers.
The Two Brewers, 42 Scotland Green, Tottenham, N17 9TT. Previously listed here, but no longer with any German beers, according to a reader.
Beer Circus, 282 High Street, Croydon CR0 1NG. Established May 2004, closed late 2007. Shame.
Utobeer Beer Stall, Borough Market, 8 Southwark Street, London SE1 1TL. Tel: (020) 7207 2725 . [map] A specialist beer stall in Borough Market. When I visited in October 2003 they had Paulaner Oktoberfestbier on draught and a well-chosen range of bottled German beers alongside their excellent British and Belgian beers. Well worth a visit, especially as the surrounding market offers a fantastic range of high quality food, earning it the nickname "London's Larder".
Backhaus German bakery and delicatessen, 175 Ashburnham Road, Richmond TW10 7NR. [map] Tel: 020-8948 6040. Primarily a German bakery and delicatessen, but also stocks German beers. I'm not sure which as I haven't visited yet. [listing added March 2004]
Hops 'n' Pops Wine Merchant off licence, 538, Holloway Road, London N7 6JP. Tel: 020 7272 1729 [map]. An unassuming off licence and general store but last time I was there they had a good range of German beers, including Früh Kölsch, Kuppers Kolsch, Paulaner Hefeweizen, Warsteiner Premium Verum, Schneider Weisse, Erdinger Weisse and more.
Finchley Wines off licence, 136 High Road, East Finchley, London N2 9ED,
T: 020 8444 8271. [map] and 75 Colney Hatch Lane, Muswell Hill,
London N10 1LR. T: 020 8444 8271. [map].
I'm told they "have a changing range of German, English and other biers,
similar to the range at Hops n Pops. Worth calling in if you are passing."
The Bitter End, 139 Masons Hill, Bromley BR2 9HW. Tel: (020) 8466 6083. According to South East London CAMRA, it offers "a vast range of bottled beers from all over the world." Also listed in CAMRA's Good Beer Guide 2001 and CAMRA's Good Bottled Beer Guide 1999. However, their website mentions only UK beers: www.thebitterend.biz.
Fresh & Wild (organic retailer and off licence), 208-210 Westbourne Grove London W11 2RH [map]. Tel: (020) 7229 1063. An organic supermarket, deli and juice bar where I found Riedenburger Michaeli Dunkel Hefeweizen, Riedenburger Organic Helles, Riedenburger Weisse, Bucher Öko-Pilsner, and an organic lager from Kronenbrauerei, as well as the Belgians Dupont Moinette Biologique and Saison Dupont and some organic British ales. Range varies, and subsequent visits saw a reduced range. Check out also their other branches:
